Importance of fungi in our life

Humans have been indirectly aware of fungi since the

-first loaf of leavened bread was baked and

- the first tub of grape must was turned into wine.

Ancient peoples were familiar with the ravages of fungi in agriculture but attributed these diseases to the wrath of the gods.

The Romans designated a particular deity, Robigus, as the god of rust and, in an effort to appease him, organized an annual festival, the Robigalia, in his honour.

Fungi are everywhere in very large numbers—in the soil and the air, in lakes, rivers, and seas, on and within plants and animals, in food and clothing, and in the human body.

Together with bacteria, fungi are responsible for breaking down organic matter and releasing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere.

Fungi are essential to many household and industrial processes, notably the making of bread, wine, beer, and certain cheeses.

Fungi are also used as food; for example, some mushrooms, morels, and truffles are epicurean delicacies, and mycoproteins (fungal proteins), derived from the mycelia of certain species of fungi, are used to make foods that are high in protein.

Therefore we can that all fungi aren’t harmful to the human. Some of them are useful however some of them harmful too. The fungus infection can be deadly for as well as any animal including the snake. According to the Microbiology Society, the fungus infection is also reported from the USA and UK

What is Black Fungus? What is the Scientific Name of Black Fungus?

The scientific name of the black fungus is Mucormycosis

Mucormycosis is usually rare, affecting fewer than 2 people per million people each year in San Francisco, but is now ~80 times more common in India. People of any age may be affected, including premature infants.

The first known case of mucormycosis was possibly one described by Friedrich Küchenmeister in 1855.

The disease has been reported in natural disasters; the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2011 Missouri tornado.

During the COVID-19 pandemic 2020/21, an association between mucormycosis and COVID-19 has been reported.

This association is thought to relate to reduced immune function during the course of the illness and may also be related to glucocorticoid therapy for COVID-19. A rise in cases was particularly noted in India.

Is black fungus and fungus on Onion colour black is the same?

The answer is NO.

Bothe fungi are not the same, just because of the colour.

This is the reason that AIIMS has said that we should not call any fungus by its colour, because this is confusing for the common people.

Scientifically the fungus in colour black on Onion is “Black Mold” the black Mold is also a kind of fungus but this, not the same fungus that is responsible for illness and associated with COVID-19.

However, for some people, it may be allergic. But that kind of Onion is well edible. But we need to wash in running water before use it.

What is Onion (Black) Fungus?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Black Mold on onion is caused by aspergillus niger, a common fungus in the soil. To discourage Mold growth, store onions in the refrigerator for up to two months. Rinse off small amounts of the black Mold on the outer scales of the onion under cool, running tap water or cut off the affected layers. The unaffected part can be used. Persons known to be allergic to Aspergillus niger should not use onions with black Mold.

Molds are considered to be microbes and do not form a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping, but can be found in the divisions Zygomycota and Ascomycota.

Molds cause biodegradation of natural materials, which can be unwanted when it becomes food spoilage or damage to property. They also play important roles in biotechnology and food science in the production of various pigments, foods, beverages, antibiotics, pharmaceuticals and enzymes. Some diseases of animals and humans can be caused by certain Molds: disease may result from allergic sensitivity to Mold spores, from the growth of pathogenic Molds within the body, or from the effects of ingested or inhaled toxic compounds (mycotoxins) produced by Molds.

Conclusion: Can people get infected from fungus colour in Black on Onion?

The Simple scientific answer is no. The conclusion is that Onion Molds a kind of fungus but not so very harmful, but it can because irritation to those who are allergic to this. However, this is not so harmful, not deadly but also not good for health. One can use such an Onion by just removing the fungus part and wash it under running water. These Molds are available everywhere in every part of the world, and not deadly.

If Food has Mold, is it Safe to Eat?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it is Safe, that says -

Some Molds are used to make certain kinds of cheeses including (Roquefort, blue, Gorgonzola, Stilton, Camembert, and Brie). The Mold on these cheeses is safe to eat. Mold on other types of cheeses should not be there. Discard any soft cheese showing Mold. For hard cheese, such as Cheddar, cut off at least 1-inch around and below the Mold spot (keep the knife out of the Mold itself). After trimming off the Mold, the remaining cheese should be safe to eat. Re-cover the cheese in the fresh wrap and keep refrigerated. Exceptions: Some salamis, San Francisco, Italian and Eastern European types, have a characteristic thin, white Mold coating; they shouldn't show any other Mold. Dry-cured country hams have surface Mold that must be scrubbed off before cooking. Discard any soft fruits or vegetables, jams and jellies, bread, and baked goods that have Mold.
