What is the Open Book Exam? How the Open Book Exam is operating?

Dear Students,

The University of Delhi (DU) has proposed Open Book Exam (OBE) for all Bachelor Degree courses including for Bachelor of Arts (BA) for 6th Semester students, because of Corona Virus 19 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The idea of Open Book Exam has received both support and oppose from various corners of the society. I am not going in that, because this is our purpose here.

What is the Open Book Exam?

The Open Book Exam is not new to India. Many other institutions are taking the Open Book Exams. Your assignment is also one kind of Open Book Exam; however, these assignments must have presentation. But this is not an open book exam in true sense.

The idea of an open exam is that you are free to consult your books for the facts and basic things. The question for the open book exam has designed in a different way so that books are open but helpless.

Open Book Exams have no direct question and also you cannot find a direct answer in the book. For example, a question starting from “what is” cannot be the question for the Open Book Exam.

In Open Book Exam, the question is based on conceptual clarification and conceptual explanation. In Open Book Exam, the question may run in two different articles or chapters. Even question may be reflecting the entire course rather than merely the particular/s chapter or the article/s. In these situations, your open book cannot help you much.

The question may be based on given real or imaginary situation and you have to explain it, in reference to your course.

Your answer in Open Book Exam should itself reflect that you have conceptual clarification.

Why it is called Open Book Exam?

Now, you come to know what open book exam is.

But the question is why it is called Open Book Exam?

First thing first, in true sense the “open book” will not help you in “exam” because of the design of the question. It will only help you to remind the basic things.

You are free to open your book, but you have to answer within the given time.

In the given time period you have to prove that you have conceptual clarification and you are capable to analyse the questions.

The meaning of Open Boon in Exam is limited to see the basic things, because of the design of the question and time limitations.

Also, it is not practised to go through the books instead of writing the answer. Therefore the Open Book will be held in exam only if have gone through the book earlier.

Therefore, the practical impact of the Open Book Exam on marks is very little.

Even some times Open Book Exam gives you fewer marks then the traditional exam. Because in Open Book Exam you have to answer more vastly compare to the traditional exams.

How does the Open Book Exam work? Or How Open Book Exam operated?

Open Book Exam means not that you can write the exam in your home or anywhere with unlimited books! In the Open Book Exam, you have to be present in the examination hall, where you can bring your books. If you do not want to bring any book, that is also welcome. However, there may be limitations of numbers of books or weight (in Kg.), which you can bring in the examination hall.

Everything is open; it does not mean that the exam will hold without invigilator. Even in Open Book Exam, the exam invigilator is there to prevent cheating or discussion within the examination hall or using any means of electronic communication, etc, just like any regular exam.

Proposed Open Book Exam in University of Delhi (DU) due to COVID 19 Pandemic

You have to stay at home. The question will be provided online and you have to send the answer sheet online too. Just like you did in your internal college exam during COVID-19 pandemic locked down.

However, I am not sure whether the question will be Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) or the descriptive format.

The ground of Opposition of Open Book Exam (OBE)

They have mainly two grounds for the opposition of the Open Book Exam.

First, everyone has no internet connection or access. And,

Second, this is will give some students more privilege over others on a social basis.

First one is not operating seriously, because except few regions all over India have good mobile internet coverage and connectivity. Thus this is not a valid base of opposition.

The second one is about privilege over others are matter in some cases. For example, if you are coming from a first-generation learner’s family than no one in your home will be in a position to help you. However, if your parents and other family members are well literate then they can help you in Open Book Exam AT Home.

Remember, the idea of Open Book Exam is not held at the home with books and family members as well as friends rather hold at the examination centre with books, not with your family and friends. Examination hall have also an invigilator. Thus some students can have privilege situation than the others.

Expected Open Book Exam in University of Delhi

The proposed Open Boo Exam is going to held in very different situations for everyone, the university, the college, the teachers and of course the students, in fact, the entire nations, entire world.

Therefore, most probably the question will be the traditional one. At least I am sure. And this is what we know till know.

Example of the question in Open Book Exam

Model Question for Open Book Exam: 1: Analyze and explain this video footage.

Answer: You need to analyse this video and photo on the basis of thinkers, theory, society and culture and other related things which you have studied during the last semester. The lots of explanations are possible; however, you have to do this within the realm of your course work. Now, think yourself, that will the Open Book help you in Exam?

Therefore, in the Open Book Exam, basically, you have to analyse and explain the question. Your marks are depending on the analytical and explanatory skills with facts, not “Man ki Baat”.

DEAR STUDENTS, PLEASE MUST NOTE that above questions are the only example in nature for Open Book Exam and do not represent the actual question and question pattern of the University of Delhi. However, what we know till now is that your question will be the traditional one.

If you want to know any things more or if you have a question then please let me know in the comment section. Your comments will be read and answered.
