Dear Students,
Today (April 21, 2014), I taught you about 'Social Stratification'. Every person can not be same in society. But these inequalities should be based on person's ability or natural. The social inequality and hierarchy in Indian is based on ascribed status not on the basis on achieved status.
Origin of social stratification in India is in History. If you go through the history of ancient India than you can find that Harappan Civilization and Mohenjo Daro Civilization was very developed and based on equality, justice and your ability. At that time status was not decided by one's birth rather work and achievement.
After attack by Aryans, Indian society became unnatural hierarchical. Aryan are not only destroyed the physical structure but they destroyed the social fabric, knowledge, development, science, art, culture, etc. Not only that but they also wanted to maintain their blood purity. This was the first reason of development of social hierarchy and stratification in Indian which was based on blood or birth. Later on these were change into four Verna (वर्ण) and Caste (जाति) system.
Some of you were asked me the source which proof that Aryan has come from outside. Good, this is showing your interest towards the subject. Here is the reference which I already told you in class, these books are -
Jawaharlal Neharu, Discovery of India
Prof. S. C. Dubey, Indian Society
Bal Gangadhar Tilak, The Arctic in the Vedas
We can say that before coming to Aryan in Indian, India was an egalitarian society. Thus we are fighting against these systems established by Aryan called Verna and Caste system to make India as a egalitarian society again.
