Dear students,
You have covered most of the prescribed syllabus for the research methodology, methods, and tools and techniques. I have taught you Sampling and Questionnaires. By using my lectures, as well as those of the concerned teachers, you will need to formulate the questionnaire.
In this assignment, you need to formulate a questionnaire, along with mentioning the universe.
Meaning of Universe
In research methodology, the term universe refers to the entire group of individuals, objects, or units that share a common characteristic relevant to a study. It represents the full scope from which a researcher may draw conclusions or generalise findings. Often used interchangeably with population, the universe is typically defined by the research question—for example, “all college students” or “all manufacturing firms in a region.”
Due to its vastness, studying the entire universe is usually impractical. Researchers, therefore, select a smaller, manageable subset called a sample, which should be representative of the universe to ensure valid generalisations. For example, if the universe includes all college students in Bihar, the target population might be students of Patna Women's College (Autonomous), and the sample could comprise 100 students from five different departments, such as Sociology, Political Science, Economics, History, and Philosophy.
Some scholars distinguish between universe and population: the universe is the theoretical total set of units fitting the criteria, while the population is the accessible portion that the researcher intends to study. Understanding the universe is crucial for designing effective sampling strategies, ensuring that the data collected reflects the broader group of interest and supports meaningful, generalizable insights.
